Logan pull-style 4000 mat cutter

Looking at the picture on Amazon.com of the mat cutter I could not see how it would work, but decided to order anyway because of the reasonable price. Once in hand its function became obvious. And the simple instructions allowed me cut my first mat perfectly. The only difference I can see between this hand-held cutter and the more expensive Logan cutters is that it requires a separate straight-edge as a guide. I used a heavy 24" carpenter's square, which I would recommend over a lighter weight guide such as a draftsman T-square, because there is less chance of it slipping while cutting. The scribing device on this series is a convenient way to mark the width of the mat border and saves time of marking each mat with a ruler.

Nice for the Price

While I'm still acclimating to a Pull Style mat cutter, I must say that my first impressions are favorable. I especially like the start/stop mark for the blade. This feature along has improved my, admittedly, novice ability to get the cut right on the first try.

My biggest complaint is the chrome (metallic) press bar. I wish it were covered in an easy grip rubber and was just a bit larger. I find it difficult to grip with my large hands.

Good mat cutter for beginners

This works as well as it is described. You need a firm straight edge and a good t-square. For the price, it is so right. It will pay for itself quickly.
